1,000 Heat Pumps Installed in Eastside Communities

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Energy Smart Eastside (ESE), a collaboration of six Eastside cities, has reached a milestone of installing 1,000 heat pumps in households since launching in 2022. The program, which focuses on equitable access to clean home energy solutions, has reduced residential carbon emissions by over 31,000 metric tons—equivalent to removing 7,231 cars from the road for a year. The 1,000th installation occurred at the home of Jenni Treadway in Issaquah, who described the benefits of improved cooling, quieter operation, and better sleep.

ESE covered full costs for five income-qualified households and provided rebates for 17 moderate-income households, reducing out-of-pocket costs from $14,000 to $6,000 for many residents. The program also helped Treadway advocate for heat pump installations in her affordable housing community, Ashford at Vista Park, through the A Regional Coalition for Housing (ARCH) program. Treadway coordinated contractors and helped establish installation policies on her homeowners' board.

Heat pumps are a key technology in local climate action plans, offering year-round comfort through heating in winter and cooling in summer while reducing emissions. ESE, managed by the Eastside Climate Partnership, includes cities of Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Redmond, and Sammamish, working together to reduce regional climate pollution and advance sustainability.
