Bellevue is hosting its first Open Water Safety Day on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 3 p.m. at Meydenbauer Bay Park. The free, family-friendly event aims to address rising water safety concerns, particularly after two drownings in Lake Sammamish this month and a missing swimmer in Lake Washington.
The event will feature demonstrations by Bellevue’s Parks & Community Services, Fire, and Police departments alongside King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Rescue, Mercer Island Police Marine Patrol, and community partners. Attendees can participate in life jacket fittings, cold-water safety education, rescue equipment displays, and adaptive kayaking demonstrations by Best Kayak.
Bellevue has six parks with beaches on Lake Washington, and the city is offering free loaner life jackets through Labor Day at several park locations. The city emphasizes that cold-water shock can affect even strong swimmers, impairing breathing and decision-making within minutes.
