REDMOND, WA – Redmond Mayor Angela Birney was named to the Governor’s Washington Space Council, an advisory group created to counsel Governor Bob Ferguson on how to keep Washington competitive in the growing space industry and identify ways the state can improve its standing as a global leader in the space economy. The council will also look for ways to develop Washington-based commercial launch capabilities.“I’m honored to have been selected by Governor Ferguson to serve as a member of the new Space Council,” said Mayor Birney. “Redmond has a rich history in the space industry and is widely recognized as a hub of innovation and progress. With Washington poised to help shape the future of the space economy, I’m grateful to be able to bring Redmond’s perspective to the table while partnering with leaders from across the state in this important work.”Established by an executive order and announced on Wednesday, the 23-person group includes representatives from local government, the commercial space industry, aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors, higher education institutions, labor, and more. This wide-ranging expertise will provide guidance as Washington aims to continue economic growth and compete globally through the commercial space industry.The Washington Space Council will present its recommendations to Governor Ferguson through advisory reports.
