REDMOND, WA – At its business meeting on Oct. 20, Redmond City Council voted to formally oppose two upcoming ballot initiatives, Washington Initiative 638 and Washington Initiative 001. Council listened to public comment on the initiatives before unanimously opposing both through the passing of Resolution No. 1634 and Resolution No. 1635. “Redmond is a welcoming city where everyone should feel they belong, be treated with dignity, and have the opportunity to thrive,” said Mayor Angela Birney. “Initiatives 638 and 001 run counter to the values of inclusion, respect, and community that define Redmond, and I stand with our City Council in their unanimous opposition of these measures.” “As City Council, we have a responsibility to protect the rights of the people we represent,” said Council President Melissa Stuart. “We recognize the deeply harmful impacts that Initiatives 638 and 001 could have on our community and we will continue to stand by our promise to help create a city where diversity is valued, every voice matters, and everyone is embraced with dignity and respect.” Initiatives 638 and 001 go to voters as part of the general election ballot on Nov. 3 and concern participation in K-12 sports and parental rights relating to children in public school, respectively. Council expressed concern that both measures are damaging to the community – with Initiative 638 imposing unequal medical verification requirements on girls participating in school athletics and Initiative 001 creating barriers to confidential support for vulnerable students – leading to the decision to put forward official resolutions in opposition. Through RCW 29B.45.010(1), state law authorizes City Council to take action to support or oppose a ballot measure so long as (a) the agenda includes the title and number of the ballot proposition, and (b) members of the public and Councilmembers are afforded approximately equal opportunity to express an opposing view.
